A sparkle in my Universe - the creation of my own perfume

Back in the Summer of 2016, my husband Serge booked a 3-hour workshop in the Tijon Parfumerie on Sint-Maarten as a surprise gift. Participants learned about the history of perfume and the importance of our sense of smell. After the presentation, we all went to a lab to create and bottle our own perfume. Mine was labelled "Caribbean Beauty". I still have the recipe: Amber Musk Vanilla, Teakwood, Burmese wood, Red currant thyme, Blood orange, Plumeria and Lilac.

Fastforward 8 years...

The day my dear Lebanese friend Rana Sakr gifted me a solid perfume from the brand Yves Rocher, I instantly went back to the incredible and unique experience I had on Sint-Maarten. I was sold. I was beyond joy. Something was awakening, a desire, a destiny, a passion of making my own solid perfume.

A typical solid perfume base includes beeswax or (candelilla wax if you prefer a vegan option) and carrier oils such as jojoba oil or coconut oil. The beeswax helps the perfume solidify and provides a smooth texture, while the carrier oils nourish the skin and act as a medium for the aroma. You can also choose shea butter instead of beeswax. I used it in my first trial but didn't like the slightly grainy/gritty texture. The graininess usually happens because shea butter has a tendency to crystallize when it cools or if it’s exposed to temperature fluctuations.

5. It doesn’t have a strong scent of its own, so it won’t interfere with the aroma of your solid perfume. This allows the essential oils to shine through without being altered by a waxy smell.

My first experience with Lemon Myrtle and Kunzea was with hand creams, lotion bars, healing salves & roll-ons where I combined it with Lavender essential oil. I really liked this uplifting, citrusy synergy. I knew some day I was going to add Rose or Geranium or Ylang Ylang. This happened today. My goal was to create a solid perfume made with natural ingredients that have fewer irritants and are more likely to be skin-friendly for people with sensitivities. I really like the suttle scent of this Fleur d'Âme, as it reminds me of the deep connection I have with flowers and the way they make me feel: rejuvenated and loved.
